Food Technology

Our main  aim is for all students to be able to plan, prepare and cook meals for themselves and others in preparation for independent living.

They will also gain a level one qualification by the end of Year 11 and could gain a level two NCFE qualification in the sixth form. This could be useful if a career in catering is desired.

Every week the students will be given the chance to cook. Over the year they will create a wide range of different dishes. They will be supported as much as is necessary to be successful whilst moving towards independence at their own rate.

Health and safety is a top priority and an individual’s needs are taken into account and adaptations are made in order to scaffold their learning.

Students will learn to:

  • Work safely
  • Work hygienically
  • Plan and cost a balanced meal
  • Prepare and cook using a wide range of ingredients and skills
  • Evaluate and adapt recipes provided
  • Identify the nutritional value of different food groups
  • Read and follow a brief in order to provide an appropriate meal for a given situation
